Part II: The Traditions in Art

Course Type:
Art for Adults

This course is designed to strengthen the participant’s understanding of the objective method of art analysis. Building on knowledge and tools developed in the prerequisite course Informed Perception, participants will deepen and enrich their understanding of art as it has developed through the centuries.

Through study and observation, participants will be both individually and collectively challenged to participate in a continuing dialogue regarding the place of the aesthetic in everyday life, and the role that art can play within such a context. In so doing, participants will strengthen their understanding and conversancy with the ideas and theories developed by Dr. Barnes, put into practice by Violette de Mazia and grounded in the aesthetic philosophy of John Dewey. Participants will be encouraged to think critically in this examination, thereby affecting a richer and more meaningful experience for all.

Please be aware that repeated absences from this course may preclude you from successfully meeting the requirements to move onto the next level in our programming. Students completing Part I, Part II and one Seminar course will receive a Certificate of Completion.

This course is eligible for tuition assistance and membership disount .
