ONE WORLD: A MURAL COLLABORATION WITH THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA MURAL ARTS PROGRAM AND INDEPENDENCE CHARTER SCHOOL, SPONSORED BY THE VIOLETTE DE MAZIA FOUNDATION AND THE FORD FOUNDATION.

One World, a mural by artist Ann Northrup, is a celebration of the diverse rural markets of the world, and is visible along the playground of the Independence Charter School, located at 15th and Lombard Streets in Philadelphia. It celebrates how the Mural Arts Program brings together seemingly disparate groups to collaborate on a single project and create something beautiful. Members of this K-8 school came together with former prison inmates through the Mural Arts Program Re-entry Program, members of the school’s surrounding community, and current inmates at a state correctional facility to create this project.

Independence Charter School is on a mission to build a future of social justice, tolerance and joy in cultural diversity, as well as an effective concern for the environment by reaching out to its students, the city, and the world at large. Reflecting the school’s emphasis on diversity, the mural design is a grand and cinematic vision celebrating the scope and variety of rural markets in India, Africa, and Central America and includes hundreds of people.

Inmates at SCI Graterford were intricately involved in the designing and painting of One World. Men in the mural class learn important art and mural-making skills while contributing to public art works within the City of Philadelphia. A mural dedication was held at SCI Graterford for the inmates who created the mural.

The Violette de Mazia Foundation teaches art appreciation courses at both SCI Graterford as well as Independence Charter School. We are proud to be a sponsor of the One World Mural . A Violette de Mazia Foundation student, Julianna Powis, prepared an analysis of the mural and we are proud to share her work with you.
